The Basics Made Simple
Turning 65 or new to Medicare? You’re not alone. Medicare can seem confusing at first, but once you know the basics, it’s much easier to navigate. Here’s where to start.
Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people age 65 or older, and for some younger individuals with disabilities or certain health conditions. It helps cover hospital stays, doctor visits, preventive care, and prescriptions depending on the parts you choose.
Part A: Hospital insurance (inpatient stays, skilled nursing, hospice, some home health).
Part B: Medical insurance (doctor visits, outpatient care, lab tests, preventive services).
Part C: Medicare Advantage (all-in-one plans offered by private insurers that bundle A, B, and usually D).
Part D: Prescription drug coverage.
Medicare does not cover everything. Most people choose other plans to go along with Medicare.
Original Medicare (Parts A & B): You can see any doctor that accepts Medicare, but you may face higher out-of-pocket costs unless you add a Medigap plan. If you want prescription coverage, you need to purchase a standalone Part D plan.
Medicare Advantage (Part C): Lower premiums and extra benefits (vision, dental, hearing), but you use provider networks like HMOs or PPOs.
Medicare has strict timelines. Knowing when you can enroll or make changes ensures you don’t face penalties or lose coverage.
This is your first chance to sign up for Medicare. It begins 3 months before your 65th birthday (or Medicare eligibility date), includes your birthday month, and ends 3 months after. Missing this window could mean penalties or delays in coverage.
Late enrollment in Part B or Part D often results in permanent penalties added to your monthly premium. These can add up over time, so it’s important to enroll at the right moment.
If you delayed Medicare because you had employer coverage, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. This allows you to enroll without penalties when your job-based insurance ends. Other SEP's include moving to a new city/state, Qualifying for State Medicaid benefits, and many more.
Each year from October 15 to December 7, you can review and change your Medicare Advantage or Prescription Drug Plan. Any changes take effect January 1.
Everyone’s Medicare journey is unique. Working with a licensed agent means you don’t have to figure it all out alone.
